Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP
(formerly known as Food Stamps)

 

Worcester Community Connections of the Worcester Community Action Council, Inc., in collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, is accepting food stamp applications at 484 Main Street, 2nd floor, Worcester.

 

Monday & Thursday 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Counted:

  • Cash
  • Bank deposits (savings and checking accounts)
  • Stocks, bonds, and other securities
  • One-time lump-sum payments, such as insurance settlements or refunds of security deposits
  • Income tax refunds and credits (except the federal and state EIC)
  • Property other than your home or business
  • Deemed assets, if you are a sponsored noncitizen subject to sponsor deeming
  • In some cases, the assets of disqualified individuals who lice and share meals with the household are also counted

Not Counted:

  • Your home
  • Vehicles (cars, trucks, boats, etc.)
  • Personal belongings and household items, including jewelry
  • Life insurance, burial plots, and prepaid funeral arrangements
  • Pension plans, including IRAs, 401 (k)s, and Keoghs
  • Education accounts (529s)
  • Inaccessible assets (assets you are not allowed to use)
  • Income-producing property
  • Assets of household members getting TAFDC, EARDC, or SSI
  • Federal and State Earned Income Credit (EIC)

FAQ's

Who Can Get Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits?

If the people in your household unit are:

  • Low income
  • US citizens for legal non-citizens and without a lot of assets

Who Is Counted As Part Of My Household?

  • All People who buy, prepare and eat meals together

What Should I Bring With Me When I Apply?

  • Identification showing your name & address
  • Proof of Income: Last four pay stubs, copies of checks or official statement of the amount and frequency of payments
  • Social Security Numbers for all Members Applying
  • Bank Book or Current Bank Statements
  • Receipts for Child Care, or the care of other dependents who cannot care for themselves
  • Receipts for housing costs, heating and utilities
  • If you are not a citizen, bring proof of legal non-citizen status
  • Medical Bills – if you are age 60 or older or if you are disabled

  
What Happens After I Apply?

  • You will receive a decision by mail within 30 days
  • If you are eligible, you will receive SNAP benefits dating back to the day you filed the application
  • If you are eligible, you or your authorized representative will receive SNAP benefits through an Electronic Benefit Transfer System (EBT card)

Emergency Applications:
Some People can get SNAP benefits within seven days of applying

  • If you have less than $150 in income per month
  • If you have less than $1000 in assets
  • If your combined income and assets are less than your combined monthly rent or mortgage and utility expenses
