The Worcester Community Action Council’s Head Start program serves 221 children and families in Southern Worcester County in 3 locations: Spencer, Oxford (serving families from Leicester, Millbury, Oxford and Webster), and Southbridge. Full Day, full year; full day, school year; and half day, school-year options are available. The center-based programs provide developmentally appropriate curricula, health and nutrition services, breakfast, lunch and snack, special education opportunities, and family services. All classrooms are nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Services are provided at no charge to families meeting income-eligible guidelines.

The Worcester Community Action Council’s Early Head Start program operates as a home-based model serving 48 families in Southern Worcester County and a family childcare option for 12 families in collaboration with the Tri-County YMCA. The focus of the Early Head Start program is to involve the parent or the primary care giver in the education of their child. Early Intervention services are provided.

2011 Head Start Class

WCAC Head Start children ready for the cold dressed in new winter coats, mittens and hats generously donated through the agency’s 3rd Annual “Clothe A Child Coat Drive” spearheaded by National Grid. See January’s Donor of the Month for a full list of all donors who contributed to keeping children warm this winter.

Parents are considered the primary educator of their children. Both programs encourage parents to become involved by attending trainings and workshops, volunteering in their children’s classrooms and becoming members of parent-center committees and policy council.
